Day Nine, On Sandwiches

It’s Monday night and today’s five hundred words are coming in just before the buzzer. I think the new schedule with five hundred words for the weekend is working so far, so I’ll stick with that. Today, we’re talking about one of the most important topics in the contemporary blogging sphere. Sandwiches.

What is the number one improvement to any sandwich that takes it to the next level? While there are many different tips you could choose or different sandwich choices to focus on, I’m going to talk about the single sandwich improvement that may have changed my life completely. That’s not even an exaggeration.

The grilled Cheez-us. That’s what my wife and I call it. I consider it the greatest grilled cheese I’ve ever tasted. The grilled cheese is already a certified crowd pleaser. But the grilled Cheez-us, that a whole new ball game. What set the grilled Cheez-us apart from your standard cheese? It’s one simple move. But first, you have to have the basics down.

First of all, when creating the grilled Cheeez-us, you have to have all the right cheeses. At least three for the optimal flavor. I personally recommend going with medium cheddar, gruyere, and mozzarella. Cheddar gives it a good bite, gruyere gives it a sweetness and salty flavor, and mozzarella finishes with the gooeyness that ties it all together. For bread, always go sourdough. Not only is it better for you, but it will add a whole new level of flavor to your sandwich. You’re on like level four at this point. So far so good.

Finally, the secret move that changes everything. Heat a pan on medium and place a solid pat of butter. Assemble the sandwich with two slices of sourdough bread and the cheeses in the middle. Now, grate more cheddar cheese and place it on the outside of the bread slices. Now place the sandwich in the pan with the shredded cheese side face down. After about thirty seconds, you’ll have an incredible cheese crust on the outside of the bread. Grate more cheddar and do the same for the other side.

Now you’ve got a delicious melty grilled cheese with a crunchy cheese crust to balance it out. It’s a completely new experience. I made this for my wife once when we were still dating, and I’m pretty sure its why she married me. Like I said, life-changing.
